Ngorongoro Crater is located in Ngorongoro Conservation area. The crater was formed when a volcano erupted and collapsed. It is a unique experience to be in the middle of a former volcano. In 2013 it was voted one of the seven Natural Wonders in Africa. safari
Ngorongoro is home to a big population of lions, and if you're lucky you can even see a black rhino, one of the endangered species. Next to that, it is a beautiful place to see. Even only driving in and out of the crater is a wonderful ride. You need to cross the rim of the crater to enter, which results in spectacular views.
The wildlife stays in the crater mainly, so there is no specific best time to visit Ngorongoro Crater. If you want to avoid the crowds, you can choose to visit during low season.
Other activities than game drives are possible. You can have a visit to waterfalls, a walking safari or an excursion to the Empakaai Crater, a collapsed volcanic caldera.
Ngorongoro is reachable by car, and is about 3 hours from Arusha.
