Ol Doinyo Lengai is Maasai for the mountain of God. It is an active volcano. The latest big eruptions happened in 2007 and 2008, but there are smaller eruptions of lava and ash flows going on.
The volcano is 3188m high and the crater is 200m deep.
It is best to climb during the nights, because it is too hot during the day. It will take about six hours to reach the summit.
Once you reached the top, you can have a look into the crater, with smoking lava. After some time you will see the sun rise and get a beautiful view over the Rift Valley and Lake Natron.
It is possible to go straight from Arusha to climb the mountain for one night or two nights (or more of course), but it is definitely possible to include this in your safariplan, on the way to or from Serengeti.
