If you want to go off the beaten path of the popular safari parks and beaches, Lake Tanganyika and Kigoma region is a good destination.
Lake Tanganyika is the deepest lake in Africa and second deepest lake in the world.
In our opinion it is one of the most underrated regions to visit. It is so beautiful, so untouched, and the best place to experience the local life of Tanzania, to dive under the surface.
Kigoma is the main city in this region. It's quite a small city, but developing a lot lately. It has an important place in the discoveries of Stanley and Livingstone. According to the story, they met under the mango tree is Ujiji, a small town near Kigoma. It is a beautiful place to walk around, due to the many hill that give you spectacular views over the town and the lake. You can visit local fisher villages. In the evening you can witness the sunset in the lake. If you are lucky, you can see the mountains of Congo.
Close to Kigoma is Gombe National Park, home of chimpanzees. Other national parks in the region are Mahale and Katavi. Two beautiful parks, far away from the touristic destinations.
