Usambara Mountains is like a hidden gem in Tanzania. With its green forests, it stands far from the classic view most people have of East Africa. The forests are home to some plant, tree and animal species that are unique for this area.
The main town in the region is Lushoto and is the entry point for the mountains. It is a lush and green area, which makes beautiful sceneries. There are multiple hiking routes, the highest point reaches about 2440m.
But there is more than only hiking. You can also come here to relax and enjoy the nature. It is a perfect escape from the more busy cities and game parks, with its colorful markets and charming villages. Next to that there is a lot to learn about culture, with for example the arboretum and herbarium.
This is a good place to visit on the way to or from the coast side, for example Pangani. It is 5 to 6 hours from Arusha.
On the way to Lushoto you pass Mkomazi National Park. This park is, among other things, known for its rhino sanctuary.
